About the author
James Cloud is a retired educator with more than 40 years of experience teaching History, Government, German, and English as a Second Language. Among his awards are The Adult Educator of the Year in Utah. The author attended the Institute of Arts in West Berlin and worked as an interpreter for the British Military Mission during the Cold War years. While living in Germany, he developed an intimate knowledge of both East and West Berlin. Cloud later completed a Master’s Degree in German Linguistics and Literature at California State University at Fullerton.
Cloud was born and brought up in New Mexico shortly before the outbreak of World War II. His first grade teacher in 1943 was Jewish. Minerva Kohn was a loved and respected woman in Las Vegas, New Mexico. His memories of her led to an interest in Jewish culture and traditions. At the same time, his circle of friends and acquaintances included many people from the German-American community. The effects of World War II had a profound influence on him, leading to a lifelong fascination with these two cultures. He also developed friendships with many Jewish people during his years in Boston, where he worked at the Gillette Company.
His years of teaching brought him in contact with people of many nationalities and cultures. Cloud has attempted to bring together in this novel his impressions gained from interactions with these groups – most especially with German and Jewish people – and how they in turn have related to each other.

The tone of the book reflects an empathetic appreciation of the struggle for survival of not only the young men caught in the battles of trench warfare on the Western Front, but also of the civilian families left behind in the city during the height of the war and in the years following the humiliating German defeat.
The author, James Cloud, with more than forty years of teaching experience and a Master’s Degree in German Linguistics and Literature is a proven writer specializing in German and English as a Second Language. In addition to attending the Institute of Arts in West Berlin, he also acted as an interpreter in Berlin at the height of the cold war. His many awards include the prestigious Siemens Zeugnis Certificate as well as being named Adult Educator of the Year in Utah. Cloud’s multifaceted background establishes him in a position of understanding German culture and assembling key pieces of history from a German viewpoint.
Brandenburg delivers an entertaining and emotional perspective on the city of Berlin during and after World War I. Opening with the declaration of war, the book follows the lives of four main characters and their families as they progress through their late teenage years into adulthood. Through intense edge of your seat action in the air and ground wars at the front, interspersed with wrenching sorrows suffered back home in the city, we witness how lives are shaped by experiences during the war and witness the maturation from naïve teenagers eager to go to war and the profound changes that take place within their city as their culture and society evolves. Many of Berlin’s historical landmarks, including museums, shopping districts, and the colorful Cabaret’s serve as a backdrop as the drama unfolds and the conflicts arise.
The reader feels every emotion as the city descends into chaos and the ultimate terror of the growing strength of the Nazi party. This book is an excellent read for students, educators, and history enthusiasts. Overall, a great story and must read for those that wish to know more about German history and the collapse of German society. Cloud presents an unbiased and broad analysis of World History that focuses on developments from the German perspective, as opposed to the many history books that single out achievements of the United States. This book serves as a reminder that, “Man’s inhumanity to man belongs to no race and carries no passport”.
I hope James Cloud writes a squeal! I am confident it will be just as captivating enjoyable to read!
Thank You Evelyn
